Gary Lynn Fair

Gary Lynn Fair went to be with his Lord and Savior on September 13, 2016. Gary was born on December 16, 1948 in Gatesville, Texas, to Lucille Cooper Fair and J.W. “Dub” Fair. He was an only child but had many aunts, uncles, and cousins as he grew up in Gatesville and later Belton, Texas. He was an active member of Miller Heights Baptist Church, where he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior at the age of twelve. While in high school, Gary played on the football and golf teams and was a member of the National Honor Society. He loved helping his parents run the Dairy Queen in Belton, and he often worked there when he wasn’t in school or playing sports. He also loved racing his car on a track in Belton, and was very proud of his mint green Ford Fairlane. Gary graduated from Belton High School in 1967, and then attended the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor for a year before transferring to the University of Texas at Austin to earn a bachelor’s degree in Accounting. Meanwhile, he and his high school sweetheart, Linda Marie Tubbs, were married in the summer of 1969, after having dated for three years. After Gary’s UT graduation in 1971, he and Linda moved to Dallas for his job as an auditor with the State of Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Over the next several years, they made many wonderful friends while living in Garland, Dallas, and Duncanville. Their two sons, Jeffrey and Joseph, were born in the Dallas area, and then in 1976, Gary became the manager of the Waco office of the State of Texas Comptroller, so the family moved to Hewitt, Texas. Gary loved living in the Waco area. He and Linda were active members of First Baptist Church of Woodway, and Gary often taught Sunday School classes there. He was also very involved with his two sons’ sports and activities, and served as the President of the Midway Little League for many years. Many people remember him serving as a scorekeeper for the annual MT Rice basketball tournament as well. He taught Linda, Jeff, and Joey to play golf, and all four of them enjoyed playing as a family. After he retired, Gary worked for some years as a consultant all over Texas and even around the country doing comptroller office evaluations. But his greatest joy was spending time with Linda, his children and his grandchildren. Gary always loved watching sports, especially football, basketball, and baseball, and he always rooted for the UT Longhorns and the Baylor Bears. He and Linda were avid Midway High School football fans, attending all the games even long after their two sons had graduated. Gary is survived by his beautiful wife of forty-seven years, Linda; his two sons, Jeff and Joseph; his daughters-in-law, Kirsten and Jennifer; and five grandchildren, Logan, Abby, McKenna, Josh, and Eric.
