Harry Warren Slade, MD November 29, 1922 – November 6, 2015 Dr. Harry Warren Slade, 92, passed away peacefully at Providence Hospital after a lengthy illness on November 6, 2015. Memorial Services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 16, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home with Rev. Curtis Holland officiating. Visitation with the family will begin at 9:30 a.m., prior to the memorial service. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, on November 29, 1922, to Leon Harrison Slade and Clara Nestrom Slade. He grew up in Ferndale, Michigan, enjoying vacations with his mother's family in Whitehall Michigan along the shores of Lake Michigan. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1940 in Ferndale and from Wayne State College in 1944. He moved to Texas to attend medical school at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, graduating from Baylor in 1946. He joined the U.S. Army during his tenure at Baylor. After graduating, he was sent to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio and then served as a Flight Surgeon with the Fifth Air Force in Korea and Japan from 1946-1949. He served his internship at Grace Hospital in Detroit, and his residency in Neurosurgery at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. In 1949, he met Betty Hummer, whom he married in January 1950, at the First Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia. A move in 1953 to Waco was halted when he was offered Chief of Neurosurgery at Cleveland City Hospital and staff of University Hospitals of Cleveland. He also was on the full time faculty at Case Western Reserve from 1953-1957. In 1957, he and his family moved to Waco Texas, where he opened his neurosurgical practice. He was a longtime member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church and the Frank Wilson Sunday School Class, member of the Waco Founder Lion's Club ( President ,1971), Texas Medical Association, McLennan County Medical Association, Texas Association of Neurological Surgeons, American Medical Association, Fellow American College of Surgeons, Diplomat American Board of Neurological Surgery, American Association of Neurological Surgery, Congress of Neurological Surgery, American Legion Post 121, Master Mason of Waco #92, Knights Templar of Texas Commander #10, Shriners of North America, and 32 degree York & Scottish Mason ,Baylor Alumni, and Baylor Bear Club. He served on the board of the Cameron Park Zoo, Salvation Army, Waco Camp Fire Girls Council and numerous other civic organizations. He and Betty enjoyed traveling the world, attending the Waco Symphony, parties and social events with friends, and supporting their beloved Baylor Bears and Dallas Cowboys. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends and family and photography as well. He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty; his parents, Leon (Harry) and Clara Slade; and only granddaughter, Danielle Bennetzen. He is survived by his children, Theodore L Slade MD, and wife, Jennifer, of Longview; Cynthia A. Bennetzen and husband, Gregory, of Conroe; Steven L. Slade CPA and Christina L. Slade AuD, both of Houston. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Jeffrey M Slade JD, and wife, Kimberly, of Dallas; James Douglas Slade and wife, Laura, of Highland Village; Benjamin M. Bennetzen and Christopher M. Bennetzen, both of Conroe; great grandchildren, James, Jackson and Charlotte Slade of Dallas and James Henry Slade of Highland Village, Texas; as well as two sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
