Hazel Genese Steussy March 31, 1927 - September 6, 2011 Hazel Genese Clayton Steussy, age 84, passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2011, in Abilene, Texas. Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 9, at Waco Memorial Park with Rev. Brad Britton officiating. Hazel was born March 31, 1927 in Lawn, Texas, the youngest daughter of William Edward and Ellen Clayton. At an early age she moved to Abilene where she attended school and graduated from Abilene High School in the Class of 1944. She then attended Draughns Business College, majoring in bookkeeping. In 1946 she married Sam H. Steussy Jr., the love of her life, and she moved to Waco. She and Sam were married for 47 years before he passed away in 1993. Hazel worked for Kraft Foods in Abilene before moving to Waco. Then she worked for Joe L. Ward Co. for 46 years. After Sam's death, to stay busy, she took a job at the Boy Scout office. Hazel suffered a heart attack in July, 2011, and moved back to Abilene to live with her sister. As a young girl, she was baptised in Lake Kirby by Dr. Hamblin, pastor of First Methodist Church in Abilene, where she attended and was a life long member. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sam Steussy; sister, Velma Mayfield and brother, Edgar Clayton. She is survived by her sister, Barbara Reynolds and husband, Don of Abilene; niece, Patricia Clayton Woods; nephews, David Merryman and wife, Donna of Abilene and Richard Merryman and wife, Karen of Michigan. She has numerous great nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Hendrick Hospice Care, 1682 Hickory, Abilene, TX 79601.
