Roy Rutland, Jr.

Rutland Jr., Roy November 7, 1917 – September 9, 2005 Roy Rutland, Jr., a longtime Waco resident, died September 9, 2005 while visiting his son and daughter in La Jolla, California. Services will be at 10:30 AM , Saturday, September 24 at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 30th and Waco Drive, with a reception to follow in the St. Alban’s Fellowship Hall. Judge Rutland, a former U. S. Magistrate, was born in Haskell, Texas on November 7, 1917 to Roy W. Rutland, Sr. and Leta Taylor Rutland. After attending Waco High school, Judge Rutland attended Baylor University and graduated from the School of Law at Baylor, obtaining his license to practice law in 1940. After brief stints as Assistant District Attorney for McLennan County and Assistant City Attorney for the City of Waco, Roy served in the U.S. Army during WWII as an Intelligence Officer with the Security Intelligence Corps S.I.C.. Judge Rutland remained and enthusiastic member of the S. I. C. Association, serving as president of that association for several years up until the time of his death. Judge Rutland was a 50 year member of the Waco Rotary Club and a 50 year member of the J.H. Gurley Masonic Lodge #337, the Karem Shrine and Scottish Rite organizations. After completing his tour of duty with the Army during WWII, Roy joined his father, Roy Sr., in operating the Rutland Meat Company in Waco and continued to operate that business for eleven years after his father’s death. Roy then returned to the practice of law and was appointed a U.S. Magistrate for the Western District of Texas in 1971 and served in that capacity until 1985. Roy continued in the active practice of trial law until August 2005. Roy was a charter member of Ridgewood Country Club in Waco and active member for many years of the St. Alban’s Episcopal Church. Roy is survived by his son, Roy Rutland, III and wife, Darlene of Austin; daughter, Patricia Anne Jasper Clark of La Jolla, California and husband, Thomas; stepson, Sigmund Reinach and wife, Mary Jane of Radcliff, Kentucky; grandchildren, Heather Rose Rutland, Emily Taylor Rutland and Michael Travis Rutland of Austin and Gabriel Thomas Clark, W.
