Salma Ateek Ammouri

October 8, 1939 — August 19, 2016

Salma Ammouri, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, age 76, passed away Friday, August 19, 2016 at her home in Waco, Texas. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 23, 2016, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Wednesday, August 24th, 10:30 a.m., at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Waco followed by a burial at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco. A lunch reception at St. Alban’s Parish Hall will follow immediately after the burial. Salma was born in Beisan, Palestine, and was the youngest daughter of 10 children. She met her husband, Bassem, in Nazareth and they married in 1959. They immigrated to Canada in 1967, and later moved to Waco, Texas in 1970 where they raised their four children. Salma will be remembered for her unwavering faith in the Lord, her devotion to family, her gentleness, her compassion, her ready smile and quick wit, her gracious hospitality and her homemade Arabic pita bread. Salma was preceded in death by her parents, Stifan and Nevart Ateek; her brother, Michael Ateek; and sisters, Hanneh Ateek, Hilda Nasser and Huda Jarjoura. Salma is survived by her husband of 56 years, Bassem Ammouri; son, Joseph Ammouri and wife, Shaza, of Frisco, TX; daughter, Lilly Ammouri Conner and husband, Jack, of Coppell, TX; son, William Ammouri and wife, Kelly, of Lorena, TX; daughter, Susan Ammouri Huddleston and husband, Brent, of Dallas, TX; thirteen precious grandchildren; sister, Neda Housson, of Eastland, TX; brother, Rev. Naim Ateek and wife, Maha, of McKinney, TX; brother, Dr. Saleem Ateek and wife Carla, of Dallas, TX; sister, Fida Ramadan, of Nazareth, Israel; sister, Naomi Ateek, of Haifa, Israel; and a host of other family members and friends. The family would like to express gratitude for the loving and diligent healthcare provided to Salma by Dr. Keith Horner over a span of 25 years and for the compassionate care provided by Bluebonnet Hospice.
