Susan McCombs, 70, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Baylor, Scott & White Hospital. She was surrounded by family and visited by many friends and coworkers. We sincerely appreciate the patience and caring of the Emergency Room staff as we maintained a vigil in and around her room during the day. Per her request, her body will be cremated.
A memorial service will be held at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church on Wednesday, January 18. Visitation is at 10:00 a.m. in the Spencer Parlor, with the service following at 11:00 in the sanctuary.
Susan was born in Hillsboro to D.A. McCombs and Doris Spencer McCombs. It was the first of several stops in Texas. Then in 1960, the family moved back to Waco permanently. She attended Parkdale Elementary, Tennyson Junior High, graduating from Richfield High in 1971. She excelled in dance and music and was never far from a dance studio from the age of three. After attending Baylor for her freshman year, she transferred to the University of Texas and the dance program. Unfortunately, a knee injury and surgery took her life in a different path. She continued to dance, and later helped choreograph the annual Nutcracker performances at Christmas.
Susan lived in Houston and New Orleans before moving back to Waco with her husband, Jack Hinson. It was here that Susan began a career of service to the elderly community, first with Regis St. Elizabeth, then in administration of several senior facilities in Waco, Fredericksburg, and Mexia. Fifteen years ago she began working at HOTCOG/Area Agency on Aging in Waco, specializing in senior issues and care. Susan’s last position was being the Managing Local Ombudsman for six central Texas counties. Additionally, she loved pets. She started and maintained a pet sitting business for many years.
Susan was a board member with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Mental Health/Social Work board at McLennan Community College. She enjoyed membership in Xi Alpha chapter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, and attended Columbus Ave Baptist Church Encouragers class.
Susan developed lasting relationships and friendships with many people in Waco. It was never more evident than the last months and weeks when she was unable to physically manage home and office. There are too many friends and business associates to thank everyone who contributed to her care. Thank you Vicki Northern. Also, Janice McWilliams, Jan Enders, Debbie Jones, Sue Cooper and Joyce Horn. HOTCOG allowed Susan the ability to work and receive treatment at the same time. There were good days and many bad days. Thank you, Gary Luft, and also Lynda Mitchell, her assistant. Susan remained close to many in her Richfield class who lovingly provided support and assistance in her final weeks. Thanks to Don Lemon for his years of being a companion to Susan. Please know that the family is forever grateful for your care and concern for Susan.
Susan was preceded in death by her father, D.A. McCombs; mother, Doris McCombs; and brother, Michael McCombs.
Susan is survived by a brother, Larry McCombs; nephews, Ken McCombs and wife, Stephanie Smith Lindsey, and their children, Dash and Isabella, and Jerry McCombs; great nephews Brandon McCombs, Justin McCombs and wife, Jackie, and their children Hadley and Hayden; as well as her beloved pets: her cat, Charlie, and dog, Snow.
Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice, but she was especially connected to Heart of Texas Area Agency on Aging, Baylor Scott & White McClinton Cancer Center, and Pet Partners.
