Adeline Iris Suggs Harris, was born on “Ground Hog Day”, February 2, 1933, in Beeville, Texas, to Carvel Lydell Suggs and Eunice Ann Suggs. Iris went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, May 17th, 2022. She is survived by her husband of 68 ½ years, Barron Harris, who upon first meeting, she flirtingly referred to as “a Houston City Slicker”. Her son, Paul Harris and wife, Susan Harris; daughter Melodie Harris McGowan and husband, Scott McGowan; and daughter, Cindy Harris Gough. Iris, who was lovingly referred to as “Nana,” had nine wonderful grandchildren who will miss her very much. They are: Clint Sykora and wife, Catia, Collin Sykora and wife, Caitlin, Casie Helleck and husband, Lucas, Jeffrey Ivison and wife, Jayln, Kari Ivison, Logan McGowan, Clay Harris and wife, Charisse, Heather Whidden and husband, Dustin, and Riley Davis. She is also survived by fourteen great-grandchildren, some of whom are old enough to remember being hugged and loved by their sweet “Nana”. The others will later hear warm stories when Nana saw them and how she would “ooh” and “aww” about how precious they were. They will all miss her big hugs and being in her arms. They are: Tyler, Haidyn, Bryley, Remy, Carter, Camden, Barron, River, Nova, Dawson, Naomi, Knox, Brian, and Judah. Iris will be missed by her brother, Ray Suggs and wife, Ann; sisters, Doris Scarborough and Claudia Rawlinson and husband, Mike; and sister-in-law, Diane Suggs, along with many nieces and nephews. Iris was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Dudley and Dewayne Suggs. After graduating from Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown, Texas, she began working as office staff for several companies. Years later she was hired as the Assistant to the Manager of the Petroleum Division at Chase Manhattan Bank in downtown Houston, Texas where she worked ten years before retiring. As a teenager, she learned to play the piano and became an accomplished church pianist and organist. When complimented for her music ability, she would pass the praise on to the Lord by saying “God blessed me with this talent.” She used her talent from her young age and continued doing so wherever Barron served as pastor. Her love for God, children, and music was evident in her work in creating and conducting many church Christmas programs, teaching Vacation Bible School, and leading children’s choir. Iris was a member of First Baptist Church of Hewitt, Texas. Her many hobbies included: watching the Dallas Cowboys and anything sports related, cooking meals and making Christmas stockings for her family and knitting hundreds of scarves, which she lovingly pinned notes to and passed out to the homeless. Three called her Mom, 28 called her Nana, but only one called her wife. We will honor Iris on June 4, 2022, at 10 a.m. at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home. Our family would like to thank Living Springs Village along with Bluebonnet Hospice for their loving care of Iris during the last few weeks of her life. If you wish to honor Iris, donations can be made to Christian Women’s Job Corp of Waco, Texas. https://cwjcwaco.org/donate-iris-harris-memorial/
