Alberta Anne Benson September 1, 1938 July 22, 2015 Alberta Anne Volz Benson of Waco passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2015. Services will be graveside at 10:00 a., Wednesday, July 29, at Waco Memorial Park with the Pastor Doug Shafer officiating. Anne was born on September 1, 1938, in Alton, Illinois, to Albert and Evelyn Volz. She moved to Waco with her family while in elementary school, and lived in Waco all her life. Anne attended University High School, and then Baylor University, where she earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology and a Master's degree in Social Work, writing her thesis on volunteerism. Volunteering and service to others remained important to Anne throughout her life. During her lifetime, she worked as Chief of Social Services at MHMR, led the Head Start program in Waco, and taught GED and English as a Second Language classes for many years. Anne believed that everyone deserved a chance and that education was the way to create a better life. While she was driven, determined, and independent, Anne also saw the best in people. She was full of energy and loved to garden, especially roses. Anne had a big smile for her friends and could be cheeky, funny, and mischievous. She was tender hearted and took care of strays of all sorts dogs, cats, birds it didn't matter as long as she could help. Anne is preceded in death by her husband, Jerome Benson; and her parents, Albert and Evelyn Volz. She is survived by her daughter, Melissa; and her son, Mark and his wife, Shannon, and their children, Andrew and Annalise; and her nephew, Jeff Robertson. A sincere thank you to the staff at Wesley Woods and to Angela Craig-Alexander for their special care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
