Alene C. Layne March 25, 1922 – February 7, 2007 Alene Cleveland Layne passed away Wednesday, February 7, 2007 at St. Catherine Center after a lengthy and courageous battle against cancer. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 10 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel with the Rev. Roger Hammonds officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Alene was born March 25, 1922 in Lockhart, Texas to Roberta Vann Cleveland and Walter Coe Cleveland and moved to Waco shortly thereafter. She was a lifelong Baptist and a member of Western Heights Baptist Church for more than 30 years. She married her high school sweetheart, H. Jack Layne, on February 25, 1943. They had three children – a son Jack and daughters Susan and Jayne. A devoted mother, she was actively involved in various aspects of the lives of her children as well as of her grandchildren and later her great-grandchildren, who affectionately referred to her as “Alene the Great”. Among her other interests were a love of Texas and American history, genealogy and Texas Rangers baseball. Her genealogical endeavors lead to the discovery of several “colorful” stories about ancestors as well as laying the groundwork for her membership into both the Daughters of the American Revolution DAR and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas DRT. She was particularly devoted to the DRT and served the local Sterling C. Robertson Chapter in every possible capacity and also served as a District V Representative at the State level. She was very proud to be a fifth-generation Texan and twelfth-generation American. She was preceded in death by her parents as well as by her husband of over 56 years. She is survived by her children, Jack R. Layne and his wife, Frances, of Waco; Susan L. Trimble of Houston; Jayne L. Green and her husband, Cliff, of Houston; her brother, W.C. “Dub” Cleveland, of Waco; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Pallbearers will be grandsons: Jack R. Layne, II; John W. Layne; Michael L. Trimble; Gregory T. Green; Blake R. Green and Chris Clinkscales. The family would like to express sincere gratitude to all those who assisted in her care, including specifically Delores “Dee” Wright and the staffs of both St. Catherine Center and Providence Hospice.
