Alvin Mills Rayburn

Alvin Mills Rayburn October 8, 1915 – November 28, 2006 Alvin Mills Rayburn was called home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, November 28, 2006, at the ripe age of 91 years old. He was a loving and kind man who devoted his life to caring for his wife and family, and serving his church. Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 1 at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church Sanctuary. Alvin was born on October 8, 1915, in Campbell, TX, to Andrew Jones Rayburn and Ellen Elizabeth Mills Rayburn. After graduating from high school in Venus, TX, he moved to South Texas to farm. There he met and married his beloved Mary Emma Woodward on Feb. 11, 1940. The Lord blessed them with their only son, Robert Wayne Rayburn, on March 5, 1956. Alvin served as a sergeant in the 7th Armored Division from Feb ’43-Oct ’45. After leaving basic training in Florida, Alvin’s tour of duty landed him in Scotland, England and Omaha Beach in France. His division continued on through Holland and Belgium and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. After moving to Waco, Alvin operated a dairy farm before going to work for the United States Postal Service. He retired from the postal service in 1987 after 33 years of service. Alvin has been a member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church for almost twenty-five years. He worked in the Children’s department and served as a deacon in the church. Alvin and Mary supported the mission program by traveling the country to build or rebuild churches. They also delivered Meals on Wheels. Alvin and Mary were honored by the church in 1997 by being named the Senior Adults of the Year. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jack, Otis, Harris and Earl Rayburn and his sister, Juanita Metcalf. Alvin is survived by his wife, Mary Rayburn; his son, Robert Rayburn and wife, Kathy; his grandson, John Glud and wife, Angie; his granddaughter, Lauren Glud; his great-granddaughter, Savannah Garrett; his brother, Everette Rayburn; and numerous loving nieces, nephews and friends. The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to Dr. Horace Hinson and to Alvin’s caregivers, Rosie Garcia, Jerri King, Mary Lawson, and Bluebonnet Hospice for their loving care.
