Ann Elizabeth Johnson

April 23, 1939 — February 1, 2022

Ann Johnson passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at her family home in Waco. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 7, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, February 6, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home. Ann was born April 23, 1939, in Mart, Texas, where she grew up. She graduated from Mart High School and was a star clarinet player in the band. She became a legal secretary to John Bates, an attorney in Waco. Ann soon met Derwood Johnson, an aspiring young attorney, and they wed in 1959. During their 62-year marriage Ann was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. Ann was an active member of the First Lutheran Church of Waco, Texas. She cherished her Ladies Circle group and the members of her Sunday school class. Ann supported her children’s schools by volunteering with the PTA for many years. Ann was an active volunteer for Meals On Wheels Waco, and for 40 years she organized her church’s participation in that charity. Meals On Wheels honored Ann and recognized her for her work. Ann was also a sports fan, going to Baylor Football games with her husband and friends Gerry and Curtis Reierson for thirty years. Ann’s most important interest was her family; she looked forward to the family reunions she hosted each Labor Day and kept everyone informed of family happenings. She lived through her words and actions. She gave and expected nothing in return. Her warm smile and sweet spirit will be missed greatly. Ann was preceded in death by her parents Elizabeth and Jewel Fowler, brother Robert Fowler, and niece Melissa Alvis. Ann is survived by her husband, Hon. Derwood Johnson; her daughter, Sara Bashaw and husband, Ed; her son, Hon. Matt Johnson and wife, Melissa; her daughter, Karen Reeves; her son, David Johnson and wife, Ashley; her grandchildren, Nathan Baschez and wife, Sonia, Jane Baldwin and husband, Steven, Matthew Johnson, Bennett Johnson, Meredith Reeves, and Anna Johnson; her sister, Dorothy Heflin and husband, Jim; her sister-in-law, Bonita Fowler; and nieces and nephews, Jay Heflin, Scott Heflin, Becky Kester, Bob Fowler, Michael Froelich, and Valeska Sather.
