Ann Marie Lockwood Howard June 17, 1926 May 15, 2012 Ann Marie Lockwood Howard, a fifth generation resident of Waco died Tuesday, May 15, 2012, quietly at her home on Lockwood Drive in Waco surrounded by family. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 17, at Austin Avenue United Methodist Church with the Rev. Chris Mesa officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 5:00 to 7:00 p. m. on Wednesday, May 16, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Garden Room. Ann, daughter of Lee Lockwood and Marie Coates Lockwood, was born on June 17, 1926. She attended Waco Public Schools and was elected as secretary of her Waco High School graduating class in June, 1943. Ann attended the University of Texas in Austin and became a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. In 1945, she transferred to Baylor University and received a BBA Degree in May, 1946. On June 22, 1946, Ann married Duncan Howard and moved to Houston while he completed Dental School and practiced dentistry for a year. From 1953 to 1955, Ann resided at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippine Islands where Dr. Howard served in the United States Air Force in the Dental Department of Clark Field Hospital. At this time, Ann traveled in Japan and Hong Kong as well as Manila and other areas. Upon returning to Waco, Ann continued her appreciation of the American Military by serving many years as a volunteer for the Waco Veteran's Hospital. When the Howards returned to Waco, Ann became active in community affairs. She served as president of the Woman's Auxiliary to the Central Texas Dental Society and became a member of the Junior League of Waco. In 1960, she was a Co-Chairman of decorations for the first Waco Junior League Charity Ball and served on the Junior League Board for many years. In addition, Ann served as president of the Evangelia Day Care Center Board and held memberships on the Board of Directors for the YWCA, the Woodland Springs Nursing Center, the Central Texas Genealogical Society, and the Oakwood Cemetery Association. In other activities, Ann was a member of the Henry Downs Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served twice as president of the Peter Folger Chapter Colonial Dames of the XVII Century. She was a member of the Sterling C. Robertson Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the Historic Waco Foundation, and the Delta Delta Delta Alumnae of which she was president of the Waco Chapter in 1977 when national sororities were established on Baylor campus. Ann cherished her active membership in the Austin Avenue United Methodist Church and felt privileged to have served on the Official Board of the church. Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Lockwood and her husband of 59 1/2 years, Dr. Duncan Howard. Her survivors include two daughters, Ann Marie Howard Cantrell and her husband, Charles of Oklahoma City; Linda Howard Tinsley and her husband, Jack of Dallas; and a sister, Laurine Lockwood Kreitz of Rockport. In addition, there are five dearly loved grandchildren; Jennifer Cantrell Gaspard and her husband Kirby and Jeff Cantrell of Oklahoma City; Captain Scott Lockwood Goble and his wife Kristi of Ft. Hood; Grant Howard Goble and his wife Kate of Plano; and Lee Duncan Goble of Waco. Ann was blessed with one great-grandchild, Charli Ann Gaspard. Pallbearers will be her grandsons serving with Lewis McReynolds, Cameron Talbert, Ralph Adams, Brad Willis. Honorary Pallbearers include the Pathfinders Sunday School Class at Austin Avenue, Charles Howard, Melbourne Appell, Bob Braswell, Raywood Johnson, Bill Oliver, Harvey Hoffman, Cullen Smith, Hal Stringer, Fred Bostwick, Claud Ervin, Marc Barrett, and Milton Wilson. The Howard Family would like to thank the nurses, chaplain, and all of the staff with Providence Hospice for their care, love, prayers, and support.
