Anna Elizabeth Sturgis Jeanes

Anna Elizabeth Sturgis Jeanes June 16, 1912 – June 6, 2007 Anna Elizabeth Sturgis Jeanes died at her home Wednesday, June 6, 2007with family and friends at her side. Services will be at10:00 am Friday, June 8 at First Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:00 pm Thursday, June 7 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. Anna was the daughter of James Henry Sturgis and Linda Carroll Sturgis of Waco. She was educated in Waco Public Schools and graduated from Waco High. In 1934, she received a B.A. degree from Baylor University where she was a member of Alpha Omega Club and the French Club. She married J. Harry Jeanes on December 2, 1948. Anna worked at Scott and White Hospital as a medical technician for many years and was attendance secretary at Waco High. She was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church serving as an Elder and as President of Women of the Church. She was named a Life Member of Women of the Church. Through her active life in civic and cultural affairs, she worked for the United Way; served on Oakwood Cemetery Board; was President of Waco Literacy Club; President of the Women’s Symphony Council; a member of the Junior League of Waco; and President of the Hamilton House luncheon club. Anna and Harry have been lifelong supporters of Baylor University due to their love for the university and its students. They have been recognized with the Herbert H. Reynolds Award, the Baylor University Founders Medal, the James Huckins, Pat Neff and Presidents Medallions, and the Judge Baylor statue in the R.E.B. Baylor Society. The Jeanes’ financial support of Baylor has been exceedingly generous and has encompassed a broad range of areas across the university. In 1993, they established an endowment for the Academic Honors Week Program. They provided major support to the Harry and Anna Jeanes Discovery Center and were recognized with the Diamond Circle Medallion in Baylor’s Endowed Scholarship Society for their gifts to endowed scholarships. She is survived by her husband, J. Harry Jeanes, Waco; sister-in-law Frances Sturgis, Waco; nephew Carroll W. Sturgis, Jr., McAllen, TX; niece Mrs. J.P. Davis Elinor, Waco; and three great nephews and three great nieces. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, the Harry and Anna Jeanes Discovery Center Excellence Fund or a charity of choice. Honorary pallbearers are Larry Smith, Dr. Robert Packard, J.R.
