Baker H. Davis December 11, 1928 - July 27, 2012 Baker H. Davis of Waco passed away Friday, July 27, 2012, at his residence. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 1, at St. Paul Lutheran Church with the Rev. Andrew Byars officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 31, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. Baker Davis was born December 11, 1928, in Kerrville, Texas, to Achsah and Jesse Davis. He spent his childhood growing up in the Humble camp near Crane, Texas, graduating from Crane High School in May 1947. He graduated from Texas A&M University on June 1, 1951. On the morning of June 3, 1951, he was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waco. In the afternoon, he married the love of his life, Jewell Grace Steinke. They were happily married for 55 years until her death in 2007. As a Corps of Cadets member at A&M, Baker was called up to active duty in September, 1951. While proudly serving his country during the Korean War, he was awarded the Bronze Star. After serving in the Korean War, he participated in the Army Reserve until the late 1950s. Baker was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service from 1951 until 1993. During that time, he worked in the Central and South Texas area. Upon retirement, he resided in Waco until his death. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. He is survived by his son, Glenn Davis and wife, Meg, of The Woodlands; his daughter, Kay Zimmermann and husband, David, of Austin. He is also survived by six granddaughters, Stephanie Davis of Washington, D.C.; Kimberly Davis of London, UK; Katherine Davis of The Woodlands; and Elizabeth, Sarah, and Rachel Zimmermann of Austin, Texas. Baker is survived by his two sisters, Sammie Davis Jarrell of Snyder and Suellen Cook and husband, Joe, of Granbury, Texas, along with sister-in-laws, Elda Steinke Lutter of Moorhead, Minnesota, Ruth Steinke of Waco, and Virginia Steinke, also of Waco. Additional survivors include seven nephew and seven nieces. Pallbearers will be Bobby Luecke, James Schlemmer, Don Savage Jr., Jay Cook, Lee Allen Jarrell, Max Steinke. His six granddaughters, Stephanie Kimberly and Katherine Davis and Elizabeth, Sarah and Rachel Zimmermann will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family would like to extend special thanks to Providence Hospice and Visiting Angels.
