Barbara Rountree passed away Wednesday, February 19, 2025 at St. Anthony's Care Center. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, March 14, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Garden Room at Wilkirson Hatch Bailey, 6101 Bosque Blvd. in Waco.
Barbara was born , May 24, 1945 in Port Arthur, Texas to the late Fred Bagwell and Bernice Reynolds Bagwell. Fred’s army service took them to South Carolina where Pam was born, and back to Dallas while Fred served in Korea, it was there that Barbara started school. Military life took them to Pine Bluff, Arkansas and finally to Waco when Fred became disabled, to be close to Bernice’s family.
Barbara graduated from Waco High School in 1963. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from Baylor University and taught Home Economics for Waco ISD for 39 years, ending her career at Waco High School.
It was in 1965 that Barbara married Algie Rountree. Algie passed away in July, 2015, just two weeks before they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Barbara was an active and proud member of the Zeta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma for 46 years. She and her friend, Gail Herring regularly traveled together to DKG meetings and conventions around Texas and the United States. In recent years, Barbara made new friends in Waco Newcomers and Neighbors. She especially enjoyed socializing with a group of women from the Waco High School Class of 1963.
Barbara was preceded in death by her father, Fred Bagwell and mother, Bernice Bagwell Rommel; stepfather, Bill Rommel; along with her beloved husband, Algie Rountree Jr. Barbara is survived by her sister, Pam Young of New Mexico along with her numerous long-time friends and extended family.
