Betty Murphy August 8, 1939 - October 6, 2012 Betty Murphy of Waco passed away Saturday, October 6, 2012, at Atrium of Bellmead. Services will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 9, at Meridian Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m., Monday, October 8, at WilkirsonHatch-Bailey. Betty was born August 8, 1939, in San Antonio, to M/Sgt.William A. Walk, Sr., and Elma Smith Walk. As a child, she and her family traveled with her father, as he taught ROTC at Paschal High School in Fort Worth and the University of Oklahoma in Stillwater. Her family moved to Meridian to be near grandparents when she was five. She accepted Christ as her Savior at the age of 7. Betty studied piano, tap and ballet as a child, developing her love of musical theater. She graduated from Meridian High School in 1957. After graduation she attended Four-C Business College. Her first job was at Curry Office Supply, where she met her future husband, Richard "Wayne" Murphy. They were married Octoberr 11, 1958. Betty was a legal secretary/legal assistant for Naman, Howell, Smith and Lee for 42 years. She was the second secretary in Central Texas to receive certification as a legal assistant. She developed the first support staff training program at Naman, Howell, Smith and Lee, and was well known in the legal community, having spoken and taught in many seminars. She also helped organize and often led a Bible study group at Naman, Howell, meeting weekly on their lunch hour. She was a member of Western Heights Baptist Church and was a Sunday School teacher most of her adult life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard "Wayne" Murphy; parents, William and Elma Walk; grandparents, Sam and Minnie Smith and John Van and Marybelle Walk; brother, William A. "Bill" Walk; and infant daughter, Alana Susanne. She is survived by two daughters, Patty Scharedel and husband, David, of Lago Vista, Texas; and Jean Self and husband, Thurman, of Crawford; granddaughter, Melissa Boehme and husband, Casey; grandsons, Aaron Toler, John and James Schaerdel, and Joseph Hale; brother, John Samuel Walk, Sr., of San Antonio; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Joh, James, Aaron, Joseph, and Casey. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to CareNet Pregnancy Center of Central Texas, 4780 W. Waco Dr., Waco, Texas 76710.
