Billie Jo Moorman Young, our beloved wife, Mom, grandmother, great-grandmother and known to most of us for the past 28 years as “GG”, passed peacefully on to her well-deserved heavenly reward Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at her home and surrounded by her biggest fans, her loving family.
The family will have a visitation Sunday, September 8, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home and continue the celebration of her life at Renew Church, Waco, Texas, at 12:00 p.m., Monday, September 9, followed by a burial at Oakwood Cemetery.
Billie Jo was born in Waco, Texas, December 2, 1937, to A.J. (Bill) Moorman and Johnie Buchanan Moorman. She attended Dean Highlands Elementary School, North Junior High School, and Waco High School and graduated in 1955. She had a love for dance and started her dancing in Waco at Elmer Wheatly Dance Studio. She continued dancing throughout her life and even took tap dancing in her 40s and 50s. Her love of dance trickled down to her daughters and granddaughters. After high school, Billie Jo went to Texas Tech University but then returned to Waco to attend college at Baylor University. During college, she was a member of the Athenian Sorority (Kappa Kappa Gamma). After college, she was a part of the Kappa Kappa Gamma alumni and advisory board for Baylor. Billie Jo married Donald H. Young in 1960 and they moved to Maryland. They lived in Maryland for a year while Don served in the Army. In 1962, they moved back to their roots, Waco. Joining First United Methodist Church in 1964, Billie Jo had her family in the pew every Sunday morning, as well as Sunday and Wednesday evenings. While at First Methodist Billie Jo was active on the prayer chain, the hospitality committee, and both she and Don taught Sunday School. Billie Jo was very passionate about community involvement and spent years volunteering in the Junior League, Garden Club, and Waco Cotton Palace.
Billie Jo and Don had four children who were the center of her life. Billie Jo’s passions included her family, cooking for her family and others, spending time together, yearly Colorado ski vacations, summer beach trips, and summer weekends on Lake Waco. Billie Jo was happiest when she was with her family, children, grandchildren, or visiting with her girlfriends.
