Bland Hugh Schwarting November 21, 1921 March 27, 2014 Bland Hugh Schwarting, 92, passed away peacefully in Austin on March 27, 2014. Graveside service will be 1:00 p.m., Thursday, April 3, at Waco Memorial Park. Burial will follow. Bland was born in Waco on November 21, 1921, to Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Aloysius Schwarting. Mrs. Schwarting was formerly Mary Maude Thompson Brown He attended Sanger Avenue Elementary and Waco High School, graduating in 1940. Bland attended Baylor University, was a champion diver and was featured in the Aquacade. He later served in the U. S. Army Air Corps as flight instructor and pilot Class 44-D from 1943 to 1945. On June 19, 1948, Bland married Marjorie Lee Smith Warren while in Baylor Medical School, graduating in 1950, with honor, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He served his internship at Tripler Army Hospital, Hawaii, in 1950 and 1951. Bland served his residency in Ophthalmology at Walter Reed and Brooke Army Hospitals from 1951 to 1954. He served at Ophthalmologist at Wright Patterson Air Force Base Hospital from 1954 to 1957. In 1955, Bland became certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. While in the Air Force, he earned wings as Pilot, Flight Engineer, and Flight Surgeon. Bland served as a private practice Ophthalmologist in San Antonio from 1957 to 2011, joining Braverman Eye Associates in 2004. He was a member of American Academy of Ophthalmology, Bexar County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, and past presidents of San Antonio and Texas Societies of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology. He served on medical staffs of Santa Rosa, Baptist, Methodist, and Robert B. Green Hospitals, and was a consultant to Brooke Army Hospital. Bland and Marjorie attended St. Luke's Episcopal Church and later became founding members of All Saint's Anglican Church. He was also a member of Coppinni Academy of Fine Art. Coming from an artistic family, Bland had a gift for sculpture and drawing. He loved his family, home, children, animals, music and art. Bland was very creative, learning to play the piano and having a gift for composing some small songs with lyrics. He enjoyed playing golf and puttering around in his shop with his "gadgets" and model planes. All will miss his warm smile, gentle manner, sense of humor, and unfailing optimism. Bland was dearly beloved by his family, patients and friends for his kind, soft and caring ways. Bland was preceded in death by his parents; Marjorie, his lovely wife of 58 wonderful years; brothers, Edmund Aloysius Schwarting, Jr., Joseph Floyd Schwarting, and William Brown Schwarting; and his sister, Gloria Marie Schwarting Broadway. He is survived by his precious daughter, Laura Elizabeth Schwarting; and his beloved son, Bland Schwarting, Jr., both of Austin; brothers-in-law, Larry Warren and wife, Barbara, of Waco, and Bill Warren and wife, Sara, of Waco; his best friends, Marsha Kern and husband, Bob, of Garden Ridge, and Joe Herrera of Austin; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the staff of Windsor Nursing and Rehab of Duval for providing such compassionate care during his last eight months.
