C. George Oatman

OATMAN, C. GEORGE C. George Oatman, age 95, of Waco died Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at his home. A memorial service will be held at 11:30am Monday, March 29 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel, 6101 Bosque Blvd. with Rev. Jake B. Schrum, son-in-law and President of Southwestern University, officiating. George was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, then moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan where he graduated from high school. At that time he moved to California where he graduated from San Diego State University. He was a long time member of St. James By The Sea Episcopal Church in La Jolla where he served on the vestry. After retirement from General Atomic he volunteered at The Atheneum, a music and arts museum in La Jolla. In 1987 he married Elizabeth Woodman, and in 1998 they moved to Waco, where both joined the Friendship Sunday School Class at Austin Avenue Methodist Church. George was an avid reader and enjoyed music of all types. His life was full of many interests including traveling to foreign lands and participating in Elder Hostels both domestic and abroad. He was devoted to family and friends, and was known as a man who lived his life fully with honor and dignity, punctuated by a sharp and witty sense of humor. George is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, step daughters, Jane Schrum and husband, Jake of Georgetown and Nancy Grayson and husband, Bob of Waco; four granddaughters, and one great granddaughter. The family wishes to thank Hillcrest Hospice and Diane Visiting Angels for their gentle, compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to Austin Avenue United Methodist Church or charity of choice.
