ANTHONY, CAROL Carol Horton Anthony, 85, of Waco, died Saturday, April 10, at Ridgecrest Health Center. A memorial service will be held at 1pm, Tuesday, April 13, at First Presbyterian Church of Waco, with the Rev. Jimmie Johnson officiating. Carol was born May 19, 1918, in Newark, New Jersey, to Ellis and Augusta Horton. She was educated in the public schools of Newark and East Orange. She received a B.A. degree with honors from the University of Cincinnati in June 1938. She worked for a number of years as a secretary and editorial assistant in Chicago, Illinois; it was there in 1944 that she met Brady Anthony at a wartime servicemen’s club. Carol and Chief Petty Officer Wilson Brady Anthony of Waco, Texas were married June 14, 1945, at Rogers Park Presbyterian Church in Chicago. Carol earned a B.S. in library science in 1947 from University of Illinois; that same year, her only child, Elinor, was born. Carol moved with her family from Champaign, Illinois, to College Station, Texas, and Ithaca, New York, as her husband completed his education. In 1953, the family settled in Auburn, Alabama. In 1960-61, Carol was a cataloger for the Opelika Public Library, and from 1961 to 1965, she was librarian of The Hollifield Memorial Library in Auburn. In 1965, she served as librarian at J.F. Drake High School, at the time one of only two public schools for African Americans in Auburn. In 1971, Carol enrolled in the graduate program in educational media at Auburn University; she was awarded a Master of Education degree in August 1973. She served on the staff of the university’s Learning Resource Center until her retirement in 1980. She and Brady moved that year to the Waco area, near Brady’s childhood home. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Carol is survived by her husband Brady; her daughter, Elinor, and husband Louis Maze, of Riesel; granddaughter Ghislaine and husband, Jay Moore, and great granddaughter, Ella, of San Francisco; granddaughter Angelica Maze, also of San Francisco; sister, Jane Risser, of Dallas; nieces, Judy Williams of Dallas and Karen Farrell of Richardson; and nephew, Michael Risser, also of Dallas.
