Carolyn Ann Saylor Haluska of Waco passed away suddenly 27 November, 2007 at Providence Hospital. Services will be at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, November 28 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. Mrs. Haluska was the only daughter of Isabelle Campbell Saylor and Clyde Saylor, born in Youngstown, Ohio, 15 July 1935. After serving as Student Council President and graduating Valedictorian from Rayon School in Youngstown, she attended Mather College at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, majoring in English and minoring in Biology. While there, Mrs. Haluska was a member of Sigma Psi sorority and elected to Mortar Board. Following her graduation, she continued her education in Library Science at Western Reserve and Drexel. She later pursued a career as a professional Children’s Librarian at the Cleveland Public Library, and then the Philadelphia Public Library, and in more recent years as a library volunteer in a number of institutions, especially St. Paul’s Episcopal School. In June 1959, Carolyn Saylor married Glenn Martin Haluska of Cleveland, Ohio. After Dr. Haluska graduated from medical school, Mrs. Haluska began a second career as a dedicated volunteer. While a resident of Pocatello, Idaho, she served as Secretary/Treasurer of Bannock County Medical Society Auxiliary, a Girl Scout Troop Leader and officer in the regional council, and in various capacities in the local elementary school. The Haluskas moved to Waco in 1978, where Mrs. Haluska continued her life of active service to the community. She was particularly active in St. Paul’s Episcopal School and Church, establishing a robust school library, serving on the School Board, as Superintendent of Sunday School and on St. Margaret’s Guild. Her contributions in the larger community were many and varied. Among other offices, Mrs. Haluska served as President of the Evangelia Settlement, President of the Waco Symphony Council, as Secretary/Treasurer of the McClennan County Medical Society Auxiliary, on a variety of Cotton Palace Pageant Committees, and as a member of the Historic Waco Foundation. Mrs. Haluska had a number of interests beyond community service, including life memberships in the Clan Campbell Society, Royal Oak Society, Sierra Club, and the Hummingbird Society. Her family was precious to her, and she loved children, books and anything that walked on four legs, swam, flew, or crawled. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Glenn Haluska of Waco; her daughter, Elizabeth Haluska-Rausch of Dallas, Texas; her son, William Andrew Haluska of New York, New York; their spouses Randall Rausch and Molly March, and two grandchildren, Phillippa Jane Rausch and Eleanor Catherine Rausch. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal School Library or Fuzzy Friends Animal Rescue.
