ATTAWAY, CATHERINE Inez Catherine McBrayer Attaway, beloved wife, friend, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, age 91 peacefully joined her heavenly Father June 23, 2002. She was a resident of Austin at the time of her death and was formerly a longtime resident of Hewitt. Services will be held at 9:30AM Wednesday, June 26 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel, 6101 Bosque Blvd. Burial will follow at Rosemound Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 6:00-8:00PM Tuesday, June 25 at the funeral home. Catherine was born January 22, 1911 in Lorena to William Harvey and Mary Blanche Hodges McBrayer. She graduated as valedictorian from Lorena High at age 16. She attended Baylor University where she majored in music education and began teaching at Lorena at age 19 and then taught in the Hewitt School. After her marriage to Boyce R. Attaway in 1932, she moved to Hewitt, where she lived for the next 70 years as an active member of the community. After a number of years as a homemaker, mother and piano teacher, Catherine returned to Baylor, received her B.A. in education and began a career teaching first grade at Midway Elementary in 1957. She enjoyed her life as an educator and devotedly followed each child’s progress through the years. A staunch supporter of the Democratic party, she was also a member of National Education Association, Retired Teachers Association, Baylor Alumni Association, Lorena Cemetery Association and member of First United Methodist Church of Hewitt. She was especially proud of membership as a Daughter of the Republic of Texas. She was preceded in death by husband, Boyce R. Attaway in 1963, both parents, brothers, Thomas and Roy McBrayer and sisters, Willie Mae Langford Brown, Jewel Stanford, and Madge Mitchell as well as an infant daughter, Carolyn Lou and son-in-law, Joseph Hobbs. Survivors include daughters, Marilyn Attaway Hobbs of Red Bud, Illinois, and Catherine Attaway Krueger and husband, Glen of Austin; grandchildren, Christina Hobbs McCraw and husband, Shawn of Spring and Thomas Hobbs and wife, Linda of Belleville, Illinois and Carrie Moody of Austin, great grandchildren, Amanda, Cody and Abigail Hobbs, Madeline and Colin McCraw, dear niece, Mary Catherine Mitchell and numerous other loving nieces and nephews and her dear sisters-in-law, Ila Ree Attaway and Mayme McBrayer, special neighbors, Carol and Bob Johnson and sons, Brandon and Barry, and Della Marie and Chester Baxley and friend, Alta Lee. The family would like to thank the staff of Spring House in Austin for their loving care and support and for the help and assistance of Circle of Life Hospice in Round Rock.
