Anyone who ever crossed paths with Charles “Charlie” Glenn Garrett, knew he was special or “bigger than life” as some described him. Charlie died Tuesday, July 27, 2021. A memorial service celebrating Charlie’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 29, 2021, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel with Rev. Roy Marshall officiating. The family will welcome visitors at 1 p.m., an hour before the Memorial Service. Charlie was born January 15, 1949, in Rosebud, Texas, to Billy and Mary Goeke Garrett. After moving to Waco, Charlie attended Waco elementary schools until his family moved to Woodway where he graduated from Midway High School in 1967. He played varsity football and loved his time in FFA classes and working on cars and motorcycles. After high school, Charlie joined the Navy and served on Midway Island in the Pacific. After serving his country, Charlie pursued several career options. Pursuing his passion of auto mechanics, Charlie worked for Bird-Kultgen Ford and Central Freight Lines before opening Garrett Auto and Truck service. Later, he became the County Shop Foreman for McLennan County. Charlie was a dedicated worker and in his spare time, still enjoyed mechanical activities. He could fix, build, or repair anything. No task was too big or too daunting for him to tackle. For examples, he once built a chopper motorcycle and restored a 1930 Model A Ford which he took to numerous car shows. Loving the freedom of riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, Charlie went to rallies all over Texas and even attended a few of the biggest and best of all—the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Charlie loved the outdoors. He was an avid deer hunter and delighted in teaching his kids and grandkids all about wildlife and gun safety. When it was not deer or dove season, Charlie believed it was time to fish. On occasion he hunted rattlesnakes and kept them as pets. In 2004 Charlie met Vicky, the love of his life. Together they loved their chihuahuas--Charlie affectionately referred to them as his “kids.” He cherished spending time Vicky as well as other members of his family and friends, often entertaining them with Elvis impressions and dancing. Charlie was proud of his children and grandchildren. He encouraged them and everyone else to “get your education.” He was often overheard saying, “Take care of yourself first so you could take care of those in your care.” The last several years Charlie enjoyed gardening, raising chickens for eggs, and tending to his cattle. Charlie knew Jesus as his Lord and Savior, and he was glad to share his faith and belief. He knew where he was going when he passed away, and he is in that heavenly home now. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and brother Kenneth Garrett. He is survived by his wife, Vicky; son, Billy; daughter, Laurie, and husband Jay Zimmerman; stepsons Jack and wife April Hanna and Steven Hanna;. grandchildren Tori Phillips, Abigail and Walker Garrett, Jake and Kayla Zimmerman, Megan Acker, Jace, Cade, Casey, and Maci Hanna; great grandson Tucker Arndt;.
