VANANTWERP, CHARLES RICHARD DICK Charles R. Dick VanAntwerp passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at home after a brief, but hard-fought battle with cancer. Their family moved to California during World War II. He lived there until he met his wife, Cynthia, while they were both working for Pacific Bell Telephone in 1980. He moved to her home in Austin where they were married in 1981. Their phone company careers brought them to Waco later that year. Dick was a Vietnam Veteran and retired from the Navy after ten years active duty and eighteen years in the reserves. He was very proud of being part of the Navy tradition and enjoyed talking about his experiences as a West Coast Sailor. He also retired from Southwestern Bell in 1999 after 30 years service as a Technician. He walked into work one Friday, asked for his retirement papers, and never went back, becoming a legend among his co-workers. His survivors include his mother, Laney Cort, his wife, Cynthia; daughters Laney and Katie, all of Waco, daughters and sons-in-law, Charlene and Larry Gilbert, Cheryl and David Pantaleo, Cynthia and Rick McMillien, son, Charles, all of California, sister-in-law, Brynn Anderson of Tyler, brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Priscilla Van Antwerp of New Mexico, uncle, Bill Sanders, six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
