MANTHEI, CHARLIE GUS Charlie Gus Manthei, 85, of Waco, passed away on Saturday, November 8, 2003 at his residence following a lingering illness. Services will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bellmead, at 2:00 p.m., Monday November 10, 2003, with Pastor Walter F. Albers officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday at Wilkerson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home. Charlie was born March 12, 1918 in Hallsburg, Texas to Ida Buro and Karl Manthei. He was baptized into the Christian faith on March 19, 1918 in Waling Texas, by Rev. Gatner. He was confirmed on April 9, 1933 at the Evangelishcher Frieden Church in Riesel by the Rev. A. Jud. Charlie grew up and received his schooling in the Riesel school system. Charlie entered the United States Army in 1944 and served for two years in the European Theater with the 79th Division. Following his discharge from the Army he went to work for General Tire in Waco and worked there for some 32 years, retiring in 1979. In addition to his work at General Tire, Charlie loved the outdoors and farmed in Riesel and the Cottonwood Community near Levi, Texas, for a number of years. He remained very active with his farming and cattle until 1999 when failing health forced him to fully retire. Charlie was married to Adeline Willmann on January 12, 1941, and the Lord blessed their marriage with one son, Kenneth. They spent 42 happy years together until Adeline passed away in March of 1983. On April 30, 1988, he married for some 15 years. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Karl Manthei and Ida Manthei Mandel; stepsisters, Elna Manthei Hodde, Alice Manthei Schronk, Lillie Manthei Emshoff, and Stell Mandel; stepbrother, Edwin Mandel; stepfather, Charlie Mandel; and brother, Herman Mandel. Survivors include His wife, Estelle Manthei of Waco; one son, Kenneth Manthei and his wife Robbie of Lewisville, Texas; one granddaughter, Courtney Manthei of Bryan/College Station, Texas; one brother, Elton Manthei and his wife Esther of Robinson, Texas; one sister, Elsie Moore of Waco, Texas; one sister-in-law, Ruth Mandel of Robinson, Texas; stepchildren, Monroe Wenzel and his wife Sheila of Corinth, Texas, Carol Reinke and her husband Sam of Huntsville, Texas, Kathy Norman and her husband Clark of Southlake, Texas; step-great-grandchildren, Mike Wenzel and his wife Jana of Bryan, Texas, Karen Wenzel of Burleson, Texas, John Reinke of Plano, Texas Stacie Reinke of Huntsville, Texas, Meredith Reinke Wilson and her husband Gary of Huntsville, Texas, Sarah Norman of Southlake, Texas, Trey Norman of Southlake, Texas; Step-great-grandchildren, Matthew Wenzel of Burleson, Texas, Kylie Wilson of Huntsville, Texas. Pallbearers will be Elton Manthei Jr., Michael Wenzel, Charley Symank, John Reinke, Trey Norman, and Harry Willmann. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1301 Hogan Lane, Waco Texas 76705, of to a favorite charity. Thanks to Providence Hospice for all their help.
