Clarence Arthur Cobb, Jr. August 25, 1923 March 20, 2010 Clarence Cobb, 86, went to spend eternity with his Lord and Savior Saturday, March 20, 2010, after a short illness. Memorial services, following the family's private burial service, will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 24, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. Visitation with the family will be 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 23, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. Clarence was born to Clarence A. and Lois Plemons Cobb, Sr. on August 25, 1923, in Bosqueville, grew up in Ocee, and graduated from Waco High in 1942. He confessed his hope in Jesus Christ as a young boy and was proud to tell people he was "baptized in Hog Creek." Clarence served in WWII as a Navy Seabee and was involved in building the hydraulic lift that placed the atomic bomb in the Enola Gay that ended the war. He worked for the City of Waco Fire Department as a fire safety instructor for 32+ years. He also was a member of the Karem Shrine Temple. After retirement, he worked as a bailiff in the 19th State District Court and is known as the "singing bailiff," who entertained jurors by singing his famous "Butterbean" song. He loved serving people, brought delight to many hearts, made many friends, and was the oldest working employee in McLennan County. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Starr Cobb, whom he married November 21, 1974; daughter, Ann McDaris of Las Vegas, NV; stepchildren, Joy Endsley and husband, Lindy, and Kent Starr and wife, Suzanne, all of Waco; grandchildren, Dee Ann Mangino-Martinez of Las Vegas, NV, and Lee Mangino of Albuquerque, NM, Sean Endsley of Waco, Micah Endsley and wife, Kelly, of Pittsburgh, PA, Katie O'Connor and husband, Sean, of Calgary, Canada, Taylor Starr and wife, Sarah, and Martin and Libby Starr, all of Waco; great-grandchildren, Ciara Mangino of Las Vegas and Colt Mangino of Albuquerque; as well as 14 step-great-grandchildren, who loved calling him "Great Clarence"; sisters, Anna Belle Beard of Indianapolis, IN, Pat and husband, Bill Lynch, of Kechi, KS; and a host of nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Columbus Avenue Baptist Church, 1300 Columbus Ave., Waco, TX 76701, or your favorite charity.
