MAW, LT. COL. RET. USAF, CLARENCE E. JOE Clarence E. Joe Maw, Lt. Col. Ret. USAF, died Tuesday, September 18, 2001 at his residence. Services will be 11:30AM Friday, September 21st at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel, 6101 Bosque Blvd. with Dr. Scott Walker officiating and Bill Harvey delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be 6:00-8:00PM Thursday, September 20th at the funeral home. Mr. Maw was born on January 6, 1918 in Anderson, SC. His teenage years were spent near Greenville, SC and he graduated from Slater-Marietta High School. On August 4, 1941, he was drafted into the Army Air Corps and stationed at Will Rogers Field, OK and Hunter Air Base at Savannah, GA, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He entered flight training in 1942, graduating as a Second Lieutenant in 1943. He instructed Basic Flying Training at Shaw Air Force Base. He was married to Lenora Carter now deceased in 1945 before being assigned to fly P-15’s off Ie Shima, near Okinawa. He was stationed with the Japan Occupation Forces at Fukuoka and was discharged in 1946. He instructed civilian flying in Virginia until recalled to active duty at James Connally Air Force Base at Waco in 1950. After assignments at Craig Air Force Base and Luke Air Force Base, he was stationed at Kadena Air Base on Okinawa where he flew F-84’s and F-100’s. He was at Clark Air Base in the Philippines from 1956 to 1960. From 1960 through 1961 he was again stationed at James Connally Air Force Base as a flying instructor in the USAF Instrument Pilot Instructors School. When the school moved to Randolph Air Force Base he was the Director of Academics for the school. In 1964 and 1965 he was an Operations Staff Officer at Headquarters, U.S. Air Forces, Europe USAFE in Wiesbaden, Germany. During the Vietnam War he flew C-130’s out of Cam Ranh Bay and Da Nang. Other aircraft he has flown include PT-17’s, BT-13’s, B25’s, T-28’s, T-33’s, T-34’s, T-38’s, and T-39’s. When he retired from the Air Force, he was a Command Pilot with 8,600 hours flying time. He was married to Gladis Campbell Denmark, an elementary school teacher, in 1968. After retiring from active duty, he completed a Masters Degree at the University of Southern California and taught Aerospace Education JROTC in Charlotte, NC and the American Military Dependents High School in Wiesbaden, Germany. After moving to Waco he restored several old houses and built violins as a hobby. He was a member of the board of the Friends of the Library, the Strecker Museum Associates and the Fonce Club for several years. He was a member of Fidelis Lodge, Karem Shrine, the York Rite Bodies, Red Cross of Constantine, National Sojourners, and was a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was a past member of the Lions Club and the Seniors Kiwanis Club. Survivors include: Wife: Gladis Maw Daughter: Dr. Carol Lucia Rollins Cargill of Port Washington, WI Stepdaughters: Carolyn Copenhaver and husband, Jim of Marietta, GA Margaret Manson of Orange, CA Stepsons: David Denmark and wife, Pam of Tallahassee, FL Paul Denmark and wife, Barbara of Marietta, GA Grandchildren: Matthew, Grace, Elisa and Harlan Rollins Brother: Alton T. Maw and wife, Effie of Troy, NC 16 Step grandchildren 15 step great grandchildren He is also survived by special friends: Sandy Sladen and Jim Manson Pallbearers will be Mike Waldrop, Bruce Smith, Bob Melbern, Dr. Fred Robinson, John Lamb, and Carl Norton. Honorary pallbearers are Members of National Sojourners #482 and Scottish Rite Brothers. Memorials may be made to Providence Hospice, First Baptist Church or Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital.
