Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Sunday, June 6 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home, Garden Room at 6101 Bosque Blvd. Mrs. Herring was born in Rogers on July 11, 1927, and the family moved soon to Waco which became home. She graduated from Waco High School in 1944. During her years there she met Jack W. Herring and the two were married soon after her graduation. She supported him throughout his teaching career as they moved with their two children to Birmingham, Alabama; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Phoenix, Arizona; and finally back home to Waco. She completed her B.A. degree at Arizona State University in Tempe. She served as Secretary to the President of Grand Canyon College and on the staff of Camelback High School in Phoenix. She taught at Richfield High School in Waco and in the School of Business at Baylor. She served in both the Baylor Development Department and the Wiethorn Information Center at Baylor. Her greatest and most enjoyable service was to Baylor University where she developed various programs, including: Mortar Board, Baylor Parents’ League, Baylor Summer School for Retired Persons, Baylor Heritage Club, and Adult Enrichment programs. She also organized educational tours for students and subsequently for seniors/alumni to many parts of the world. She and Jack were active leaders in Baylor In London tours with fellow Professors from the English and History Departments. She was active in the Baylor Round Table, the Current Events Club of Waco, and served with her husband as sponsors of Kappa Theta Women’s Social Club at Baylor in the 1960’s. In the early 1980’s Mrs. Herring established the Special Wish Foundation in cooperation with Delta Delta Delta Sorority at Baylor. This group provides funds to fulfill a special wish for terminally ill children in the Waco area and was the result of her desire to honor her grandson, Joseph, who died of leukemia. While her life was enriched by multiple travels and her love for Baylor, her greatest devotion was to her grandchildren who brought her constant pleasure and pride. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Joseph Hugh Flood, III, and by her husband, Jack. Survivors include her daughter, Penny Flood and husband Joe; her son Paul Herring and wife Carolyn; grandchildren Dr. Kellie Flood, Jack Flood, Elizabeth Flood and her fiancé Jack Rizzo, Reece Flood and his wife Erin, Kyle Herring and his wife Nicole, John Herring, and Lance Herring. Pallbearers will be Paul Herring, Kyle Herring, John Herring, Lance Herring, Joe Flood, Jack Flood and Reece Flood. The family would like to express special thanks for the loving care and attention given to Mrs. Herring over the past two years by the management and staff of the Avalon Residential Care home on Royal Circle in Dallas. Tim Seib, Ruby Ray a true “jewel”, Timisha Hardin, Jayne Ndhlovu, Lorraine Mubuya, Reuben Phiri, Sonya Burts, and Katrina Cooper each go above and beyond all expectations in providing a comfortable home environment for their residents. For those desiring, the family has suggested the Armstrong-Browning Library Guardian Angel Fund at Baylor University, the Kiwanis Club of Waco Foundation, or the charity of choice for memorial contributions.
