Darrell Roger Slette

Darrell Roger Slette, M.D. December 24, 1931 - July 14, 2015 Darrell Roger Slette, M.D., of Waco passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2015. His memorial service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 3, at Lake Shore Baptist Church. Darrell was born December 24, 1931, in Blair, Wisconsin, to Oswald and Beatrice Slette. He worked in private practice as a medical doctor in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at Providence Hospital and Hillcrest Hospital in Waco, Texas. Prior to that time he was in private practice in Appleton, Wisconsin, from 1962 through 1997. Darrell earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and his Medical Doctorate from George Washington University Medical School in Washington, D.C. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1962, and later trained in Gastroenterology in Chicago. He was board-certified in Internal Medicine and was a Fellow in the College of Gastroenterology. He maintained his board recertification in Internal Medicine while in private practice. He was very passionate in life with medicine, golf, sports and music. Darrell was a long-time member of Austin Avenue United Methodist Church in Waco, where he sang in the choir; in recent years he attended Lake Shore Baptist Church. Darrell was a member of the American Medical Association, the McLennan County Medical Society, Ridgewood Country Club, Rotary International, and the Waco Civic Choir. He supported Meals on Wheels, McLennan Community College and the Waco Zoo, among other civic causes. He was preceded in death by his parents; by his first wife of 40 years, Lucile H. "Lu" Slette; and by sisters Doris Anderson of Waterloo, Wisconsin, and Arleen Gleason of Clintonville, Wisconsin. Darrell is survived by his wife of nearly 15 years, Donna Spence Slette, of Waco; his daughter, Carolyn Ficklin and husband, Andy, of Valley Mills; his son, Steve Slette and wife, Araceli, of Coppell, Texas; and grandsons, Mark and Allan Slette of Coppell. He is also survived by the family of Donna Spence, including Thomas Spence, David Spence, Susannah Spence Salmans, and their spouses and children.
