Derrell Elkins November 25, 1947 – March 30, 2006 Derrell Wayne Elkins, age 58, died Thursday, March 30, 2006 at a local hospital. Services will be at 2:00 PM on Sunday, April, 2 at Wilkirson Hatch Bailey Bosque Chapel with Rev. Pamela Dykehouse officiating. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery in Freestone, TX. Visitation with the family will be at 4 to 6 PM Saturday, April 1st. Derrell was born November 25, 1947 in Mexia to Wallace D. Elkins and Hazel Newsom Elkins Kay. He graduated from University High School in 1966. He married the former Mary Taylor July 23, 1966 in Waco. He served in the U.S. Army from 1969-1971. Derrell had worked several years in the grocery business and was owner of Shortbread Check Cashing. Derrell was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Mary, son Dereke and wife Janet of Hewitt; daughter, Jenifer of Lorena; grandchildren, Ashley Jones and “Poppa’s” girl Hannah Grace Elkins of Hewitt, stepfather, Pat Kay of Waco and stepmother, Drebon Elkins of Mississippi. Also surviving are brothers, Gary Middleton and wife Brenda of Ft. Worth, Charles Schull and wife Doris of Colorado, Wallace Elkins, Jr. and wife Theresa of Alvarado; sisters, Marjorie Williams and husband, Don of Axtell, Cynthia Rhoden and husband John of Mississippi, Linda Geiss and husband John of Alvarado and Ruby Rockwell of Ft. Worth; sisters-in-law: Barbara Darby and husband Calvin of Waco, Donna Taylor Latham and husband Danny of Farmersville; brother-in-law Charles Taylor and wife Beverly of Bruceville; uncles, Dale Newsom and wife Patty of Sudan, Walter Newsom of Bryan, LeeRoy Elkins and wife Shirley of Houston; aunts, Pauline Gilliam of Houston, and Alice Newsom Cartwright of Teague; many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends who will miss him. Memorials may be made Lake Shore United Methodist Church or the Volunteer Services Council of Waco Center for Youth, 3501 N. 19th St., Waco, TX, 76708.
