Doris Dennette Ray Richey, 87, of Waco, passed away Thursday, September 15, 2005 at a local nursing home. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, September 19, 2005 at St. Catherine’s Chapel with the Msgr. Mark Deering officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, September 18, 2005 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. Doris was born August 29, 1918 in Macomb, Oklahoma to Oscar and Anna Hardin Ray. She attended elementary and high school at St. Mary’s Academy, Sacred Heart, Oklahoma, graduating in 1937. She also attended St. Anthony School of Nursing in Oklahoma City, graduating as a registered nurse on May 13, 1942. Doris enlisted in the Army in December, 1942 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corp. She was assigned to Borden General Hospital in Chickasha, Oklahoma on April 2, 1943 and 71st Evacuation Hospital in Camp Carson, Colorado on September 7, 1943. She also spent one year in desert warfare training at Needles, California and Bend, Oregon. She departed for England with the 105th Evacuation Hospital, Fort Jackson, South Carolina, arriving in September, 1944. They landed at Normandy in October 1944, traveling through France, Belgium, and Holland before arriving in Germany in March, 1945. She was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in February, 1945. She was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received when the hospital was bombed and a Soldier’s Medal for moving patients out of a burning ward tent in Germany. She was discharged in November, 1945. Doris is registered in the “Women in Military Service for America” Memorial. She was an active member of the Historic Waco Foundation. Mrs. Richey enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies, including flying, dove-hunting, fishing, and playing bridge. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Harvey Richey, Jr., and her brothers and sisters: Delia Hyden, Nancy Pressas, Devoril Ray, Nadine Duncan, Mamie Blackmon, Hazel Day, Ramona Salgoda, Roy Ray, and John Ray. She is survived by daughter, Dana Ray Rees of California; sons, Harvey M. Richey III and wife, Patricia of San Antonio, William Winthrop Richey of DeSoto, and Robert Hardin Richey and wife, Karen of Georgetown; grandchildren Harvey M. Richey IV, Patrick Lynn Richey, Alicia Starr Richey, and Samatha Ray Richey; great-granchildren, Theresa Richey, Bailey Marie Richey, and Jammie Lynn Richey.
