Doris Engdahl Smith

August 5, 1929 — September 19, 2017

Doris Engdahl Smith, or "Dede" as her family called her, passed away on the morning of Tuesday, September 19, 2017, in Houston, Texas, after a short illness. Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 22, at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, September 21, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home. Mrs. Smith was born on August 5, 1929, in Brady Texas. She attended Texas Tech University and graduated with a degree in education, and went on to be a teacher for many years. On the Fourth of July in 1948, Doris met the love of her life, Glenn Smith, at the Brady jubilee. They cherished their daughters and spent many memorable years traveling the world together while Glenn was employed by Behrens Inc. During the last 30 years since losing her one and only love, she found solace through her church, First Baptist Church of Waco. Doris lived out her last years in Houston, near her daughters and grandchildren, but always wanted to return to Waco. She has now returned and will be laid next to her dear husband. Thanks to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, she is reunited with him in spirit and all of her loved ones for eternity. She is preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Smith; parents, Chester and Frances Engdahl; and grandson, West Tower. She is survived by her daughter, Fran and son-in-law, Bill Tower, of Houston; her daughter, Jan Cater of Katy; five grandchildren, Glyn and Stephanie Tower, and Chelsea, Haylee, and Colton Cater; great granddaughter, Piper Cater; sister-in-law, Neva Smith and her family of Dallas; the Clifton family; and all of her loved ones in Waco. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the University of Texas Glenn Smith Memorial scholarship fund at the College of Pharmacy in Austin Texas or the charity of your choice. The family invites you to leave a message or memory on our “Tribute Wall” at www.WHBfamily.com.
