Doris Abbe Mize passed away peacefully on October 1, 2023, at the age of 96. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 9, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home, with interment to follow at Waco Memorial Park. A visitation will be held at 9:00 a.m., preceding the service.
Doris was born May 28, 1927, to George and Lucy Smith Abbe in Windsor, Texas. Doris graduated from McGregor High School and went to work at the Bluebonnet Ordnance Plant to support the war effort.
On May 29, 1948, she married Jimmie Mize, and they were married for over 50 years. In 1953 while working for Waco Transit in downtown Waco she, and Jimmie both survived the devastating tornado that struck on May 11. She then worked for First Federal Savings and Loan for over 50 years. After Doris retired, she and Jimmie enjoyed traveling the country with her sister Betty and husband Bob. For many years Doris was a member of Lakewood Christian Church. Doris also began painting with oils in her 70s and truly enjoyed creating beautiful artwork.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; George and Lucy Smith Abbe; husband, James L. Mize; and her brothers, Buddie, and Ed Abbe.
Doris is survived by her sister, Betty Padden of Marietta, Georgia; her children, Patricia Jenkins of Arlington, Texas, Robert Mize, and his wife Carol Jo of Waco; her grandchildren, Amy Jenkins and husband Chris Brown of Alexandria, Virginia, Chad Jenkins of Newark, California, Macey Mize of Longview, Texas, Meagan Mize, and Michael Mize of Waco; and one great grandchild, Brodie Brown of Alexandria, Virginia. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
