Dorothy Covington Hightower March 24, 1933 - October 28, 2014 Dorothy Covington Hightower passed away in Houston on Tuesday, October 28, 2014. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 31, at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco, Texas. Her memorial service will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 3, at St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston. A complete obituary will be published Sunday, November 2, in the Houston Chronicle. The family invites everyone to a reception in Bagby Hall immediately following the service. She was born to Helen B. and Tom W. Covington on March 24, 1933, in Orange, Texas. The family moved to Houston in 1934, where Dorothy attended public schools, graduating from San Jacinto High School in 1951. While attending Baylor University, she met and became engaged to William B. Hightower, both graduating in 1954. They were married July 17, 1954. Dorothy loved her family and cherished her many friends. She belonged to many organizations over the years, including serving as a Docent at Bayou Bend, a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, the Tanglewood Garden Club, and the Brown Thumb Garden Club. She played in two bridge clubs with some of her closest friends. In her earlier years, she loved working with flowers and plants and always had something pretty growing in the house or on the patio. As her family grew, she loved spending time with her grandchildren or, as she would say, "the practically perfect grandchildren," Jennifer, Wesley, John, Will and Laura. Dorothy had a great sense of humor and was a loving and caring, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Dorothy is survived by her husband of sixty years, Bill Hightower; son, Richard Hightower and his wife, Gayle; daughter, Gayle Durie and her husband, John; son, Ken Hightower and his friend, Mindy Montgomery; grandchildren, Jennifer Monteleone and husband, Will, Wesley Hightower and his wife, Emily, John, Laura and Will Durie; and sister, Jean Dickens. For those desiring, the family suggests memorial donations be made to St. Martin's Episcopal Church, the Tanglewood Garden Club or Bayou Bend Gardens.
