Dorothy Shellenberger of Waco, Texas, passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2016. A Memorial Service in her honor will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 17, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 16, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel. Dorothy Shellenberger was born on February 28, 1918 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Bess and Carl McManus. She grew up in Woodlawn Park, Oklahoma where she attended Putnam City schools. Dorothy graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1940 with a degree in Speech and Drama. She was married to Dr. Charles Shellenberger on May 25, 1941. They moved to Waco, in 1945, where Charles began his pediatric practice. They were long time members and Sunday school teachers at Calvary Baptist Church and then at Highland Baptist Church. Charles and Dorothy were very involved with Baylor University and began an outreach to International Students who were attending Baylor. They later visited many of these students in their home countries. Dorothy was a distinguished author and gifted speaker. She was published in Guidepost, Readers Digest, and other Christian magazines. Dorothy and Charles became involved in Dallas Baptist University where they were both awarded Honorary Doctorates. She received the Ruth Award at DBU and served on their Board of Directors for nine years. After Charles’ retirement, they traveled and did mission work in Haiti and Guatemala. Their favorite destination was their home in Salida, Colorado, where they spent many summers there. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Charles Shellenberger and her grandson, Lowell Layne. She is survived by her daughter, Sally Layne (Ottis); sons, David (Melina) and Richard (Vicki); and daughter, Susan West (Gaines). She leaves 10 surviving grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
