Dorothy Short Sawyer-Brewer died on January 1, 2017, in Waco, Texas. Services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 7, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Durham officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m., prior to the service at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home. She was born on June 11, 1928, in Waco to Robert Aubrey Short and Leola Inez Short. She attended Waco schools, graduating from Waco High in 1946 and later from Four-C Business College. She began a 40-year career at Retail Credit Company, later named Equifax, in September of 1947, retiring as a field representative in 1987. Following her retirement, she worked for a time as activities director at Lake Shore Retirement Home. She married Warren D. “Buzz” Sawyer in Waco in April 1949. After a long and happy marriage, he died in February 1987. In March 1998, she married long-time friend, Dr. Jesse H. Brewer, Jr. His illness and death in December 2000 brought an early end to their happy marriage. Dorothy committed her life to Christ at an early age at Vacation Bible School, followed later by baptism. She was a life-long Baptist, having been a member of Tabernacle Baptist, Memorial Drive Baptist, Lake Shore Baptist, and for many years, Columbus Avenue Baptist and the Ruth Class. She volunteered at a number of places, including Hillcrest Hospital Auxiliary, Hillcrest Hospice and Ridgecrest Retirement Center. She was a fifty-year plus member of Beta Sigma Phi, receiving many honors, and lastly a member of Master Beta Epsilon Chapter. She was twice president of Waco City Council of Beta Sigma Phi. She was active in years past with Lone Star Chapter of ABWA and in the Waco Federation of Women’s Clubs and Presidents’ Club. She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and a step-grandson, John Hamilton Stapp; and sister-in-law, Windy Brewer of Slaton, Texas. She is survived by stepchildren, Dr. J.H. Brewer III and wife, Pat, of Vancouver Island, B.C., Carla Brewer of Dallas, and Lisa Brewer Stapp and husband, Steve, of England; step-grandchildren, Jed and Rebecca Brewer of Vancouver, and Jessica Stapp Flanders and husband, Dylan, of New Hampshire, and their daughter, Jocelyn; special cousins, Lewis Wallace and wife, Portia, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, and Robert Short and wife, Rosina, of Del Rio, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Lewis Wallace, Steve Stapp, Scott Wallace, Brent Johnson, David Hunt and Gus Krueger. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Jose Garrido and members of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
