Douglas Wiley Crow

Dr. Douglas Wiley Crow of Waco passed away Friday, December 2, 2016. Services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 10, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel with the Rev. Matt Snowden officiating. Doug was born December 7, 1937, in Fort Worth, to Robert Vernon Crow, Sr., and Leta Marie Wiley. He graduated from Paschal High School in 1956, where he participated in football and track. In 1955 he won the city 100-yard dash. His senior year he was elected Student Body President. He received his B.A. from the University of Oklahoma, where he was an All-American Athlete; M.A. from the University of Texas; and Ph.D. from Louisiana State University. A true Renaissance man, he spoke four languages fluently, and was in the process of learning Greek. He was Professor Emeritus of German at Baylor University and organized one of the University’s earliest student abroad programs to Vienna, Austria. Baylor University appointed Doug, a self-taught artist, Sculptor-in-Residence in 1987. His final sculpture was the Pyfer bear in front of the McLane Student Life Center. Doug explained at the dedication that he wrote his life motto in Greek on the bear’s back left foot. Translated it meant, “With God’s Help.” Aware that his talents were blessings from God, he gave thanks to Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior. His favorite Bible verse was Luke 11:11, where Jesus asks: If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Fighting valiantly till the end, he died from complications of a stem cell transplant at Baylor Medical in Dallas, where his work titled “Keepers of the Flame” is installed in the Washington Street entrance of the hospital. Doug was preceded in death by his parents; and two beloved sons, Matthew Scott, and infant, Wiley Durant. He is survived by his wife of nearly 42 years, Sharon; son, Robert; daughter, Angela Lowe and husband, John; two grandchildren, Emma and Lilly Lowe; and a brother, Robert V. Crow, Jr., and wife, Jane Goode, of Wisconsin. In lieu of flowers, please give to The Salvation Army or to a charity of your choice.
