Dr. Edwardtommy Lee Smith

June 22, 1930 — May 14, 2001

SMITH, DR. TOMMY Dr. Edward Lee Smith, known all his life to family and friends as “Tommy” was born June 22, 1930 in Ranger, TX to Jewel Inez Dillard Smith and Sandefer Anthony Allen Smith. He went to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday, May 14, 2001. He will be dearly missed. Services will be 11:30 AM Thursday, May 17th Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel, 6101 Bosque Blvd. with his good friend, Bert Mercer officiating and eulogy by Coach Vernon Leverett. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 5:00-7:00 PM Wednesday, May 16th at the funeral home. After graduating from Clyde High School in 1948, and Abilene Christian College University in 1952, Dr. Smith attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and graduated with his M.D. in 1956. He did a straight medicine internship and a radiology residency from 1956-1960 at the V.A. Hospital in Dallas. He taught clinical instruction of radiology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA from 1961 to 1963. He practiced medicine as a radiologist in Waco with Waco Radiological Clinic at Hillcrest, Providence, Mexia, Groesbeck, and Fairfield Hospitals from 1963 until he retired in 1994. He then was with the V.A. Hospital in Waco until 1999. Dr. Smith held memberships in the Texas Radiological Society, The American College of Radiology, The Texas Medical Association, The McLennan County Medical Society and The Nuclear Medicine Society. He was the clinical assistant professor in the department of family medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and on the Advisory Board and National Development Council of Abilene Christian University. He was also team doctor for the Midway High School Panthers for several years. Dr. Smith was preceded in death by his father, mother and sister, Mary Smith. He was a member of Crestview Church of Christ since moving to Waco in 1963. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Providence Hospital in Waco, Seton Hospital in Austin and Providence Hospice in Waco for caring for Dr. Smith. Survivors include: His loving wife of 47 years: Wilma Lea Marsh Smith Daughter: Marsha Lynn Smith Turner and husband, Steve of Austin Sons: Tommy Allen Smith and wife, Candie of Panama City, FL Russell Anthony Smith and wife, Donnis of Waco Grandchildren: Jillian Nicole Smith, Erick Allen Smith, Angela Ryane Turner, Alexandria Shea Turner, Corey Christopher Turner, Ian Russell Smith and Audrey Frances Smith, who all lovingly referred to him as “Doc”. Pallbearers will be Harry Holder, Jimmy Sorrells, Howard Hagar, Preston Poole, Dr. Todd Barfield, Dr. Roy Willingham, Andy Miller, and Ray Zeigler.
