Dr. Edwin J. Mays October 24, 1919 - July 12, 2009 Dr. Edwin J. Mays of Waco passed away Sunday, July 12, 2009. A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, at Dayspring Baptist Church with the Dr. Burt Burleson officiating. There will be a private family burial at Oakwood Cemetery. There is not scheduled visitation, but beginning Tuesday morning he will be in state. Edwin was born October 24, 1919 in Mineral Wells, TX to Trosper and Madeline Mays. He graduated from Tarleton College, attended the University of Texas, was a captain in the U.S. Army, and received degrees from Baylor University and Southwestern Seminary. He was pastor of seven different churches over a span of 50 years and finished his ministry as a teacher at Baylor. He was a member of Dayspring Baptist Church in Waco. He was preceded in death by his parents and his step-mother; daughter, Cindy Evans and son-in-law, H. Gene Evans; and his brother, J.C. Mays. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mary; two sons, Mark Howard Mays and wife, Jo Ann; David Burkett Mays; grandchildren, John Evans; Murray Evans and wife, Kim; Emily Benoit; Laura Tolar and husband, Chris; Jessica Mays; Sarah Mays and Emma Mays; and great grandchildren, Regan, Madeline and Lauren Evans; and his sister, Marian Johnson and husband, Ralph.
