Dr. James William Dixon, Jr.

DIXON, JR., DR. J. W. Dr. James William Dixon, Jr., 91 of Woodway, went to join the Lord, his devoted wife of 66 years, his parents and younger brother Gerald, Wednesday, February 23, 2005. Services will be held at 10am Monday, February 28 at Waco Memorial Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. Wally Christian and Dr. Herbert Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial North. Visitation with the family will be from 5-7pm Sunday, February 27 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. J. W. was born July 12, 1913 to J. W. and Mary Elizabeth Dixon, the second child of four boys in Wingate, Texas. He graduated from Winters, Texas High School, received Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Baylor University and PhD. from University of Wisconsin. He taught for several years in high schools around Texas, taught in the Army Air Force and Navy training programs during WWII, and then taught at Baylor University for 36 years in the Geology Department and retired as chairman of that department in 1977. On June 2, 1938 J. W. married the light of his life, Lenora Cornwell in the First Baptist Church of Waco where he was a member. Lenora preceded him in death on January 31st of this year. Survivors include brothers Henry Dixon and wife Jeanette of Ohio and Harold Dixon of Texas; sister-in-law Carolyn Dixon of Tennessee; nieces and nephews Jan Dixon Gardner, Ann Dixon Baker, Elizabeth Dixon Mountain, Donna Dixon Sokol, Dr. Robert Dixon, Rev. William Dixon, Jim Dixon, Ann Price, and Bill and Nana Cornwell. The family requests, in lieu of flowers that memorial gifts be designated to Baylor University, Gifts Accounting, One Bear Place, #97050, Waco, TX 76798.
