OBITUARY FOR DR. RICHARD CUTTER Dr. Richard Cutter, 78, of Waco, died peacefully Tuesday morning, July 2, 2002, at his home following a lengthy illness. Services will be held at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home, 6101 Bosque , Waco, Texas at 11:30 A. M. on Friday, July 5th with Richie Fletcher and Rev. Charles Edward Davis, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco. Visitation will be from 10:30 TO 11:30 A.M. Friday morning. Dr. Cutter was born February 8, 1924 in Woodward, Oklahoma, the son of Charles Richard Cutter, Jr. and his wife, Mary Ellen Lowrey Cutter. After spending most of his youth in Garden City, Kansas, he entered Panhandle A&M College in Guyman, Oklahoma. He met Phyllis Marie Fletcher during his college days, and they were married on November 15, 1942 in her hometown of Gruver, Hansford County, Texas. Shortly thereafter he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, was commissioned as a Lieutenant, and flew 26 combat missions over Europe as a Navigator in a B-17 Flying Fortress. Following his discharge from the service after the war, he and Phyllis moved to Gruver, Texas where they owned and operated a grocery store. Dr. Cutter then entered Baylor University, graduating with a PHD in Greek in 1953. He also received Master of Theology and Doctor of Theology degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. He served as Pastor of Kopperl Baptist Church and also at a Baptist church in Mineola before becoming a Professor of Greek and Latin in 1958 at Baylor. He was made Chairman of the Baylor Classics Department in 1984 and retired in 1994. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Cutter of Waco; daughter, Cynthia Marie Cutter Wheeler and her husband, Rob Wheeler of Leander, Texas; daughter, Marcia Ellen Cutter Neel and her husband, Ben Neel of Menard, Texas; granddaughters, Carrie Marie Wheeler Cross and her husband, Kevin Cross, of El Paso, Texas; Robyn Ellen Wheeler Cromwell and her husband, Benjamin Cromwell, of Point Venture, Texas; Ali Katherine Wheeler of Leander, Texas; Emily Marie Walker of Austin, Texas; Leslie Ann Walker Pratt and her husband, Nicholas Pratt of Leander, Texas; Audrey Marie Neel of Roanoke, Texas; and Bonnie Ellis Neel of New York, New York; great-grandchildren, Sabrina Marie Pratt, Cooper Alan Pratt, and Riley James Neel- Hernandez; and brother, William Cutter of Superior, Kansas. The family would like to extend a special and loving thanks to caregivers Lois Revis, Ray Williams, Debra Garrett, and Sherri Williams.
