Dr. Walter B King, Jr. February 1916 - April 7, 2008 Walter Blackburn King, Jr., 92, of Waco passed away Monday, April 7, 2008. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 11, 2008 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel with Monsignor Mark Deering, Jeff Kilgore and Dr. Scott Walker officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 8:00 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. A devoted and caring physician. A loving husband and father. These were some of his roles. Walter B. was born in February of 1916 in Seguin, TX to Ida and Walter King. He attended the Waco Public Schools, graduating from Waco High School in 1933. In 1935, at Baylor University, his life would forever change after meeting the love of his life, Anna Margaret Willoughby. After graduating from Baylor in 1936, he and Anna Margaret became engaged. Their marriage was on hold while he attended medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston graduating in 1940. From there, he interned at Kansas City General Hospital 1940-1941. Finally in June of 1941, the long awaited day arrived, Anna Margaret and Walter B. were wed. In December of 1941, he had to leave his bride to serve as a Battalion Surgeon, 46th Engineers in the South Pacific. He was there 33 long months. When Walter B. returned, he was stationed at Walter Reed General Hospital through 1945. His residency was at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, TX, in Pathology and in Surgery through 1950. Dr. Walter B. King was so proud to be a doctor. His accomplishments were many and he had asked that they be listed. They are as follows: American Board of Surgery; McLennan County Medical Society; Southern Medical Assoc.; American Medical Assoc.; American College of Surgeons; Texas Surgical Society-Secretary, President, Archivist, Editor and 1st Award of Service; Southwestern Surgical Congress; Singleton Surgical Society; Southern Surgical Assoc.; Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery at Hillcrest Hospital and Providence Hospital. He also wrote numerous articles for the American Journal of Surgery, Texas Medicine and made presentations for various organizations. After his career which stretched from 1950-1989, Walter B. and Anna Margaret were involved with "Meals on Wheels". They delivered meals to "old people", many who were much younger than themselves. It was during this time, Walter B. became a "certified bottle washer". His certification card stayed in his wallet at all times, and he was quite proud of it. The greatest gift a father can give his children is to love their mother. He gave us this gift. When he died, his eyes were closed, but his heart was open. Dr. Walter B. King, Jr., a devoted and caring physician, devoted husband and father and certified bottle washer. A giant among men, he will be missed, but never forgotten. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Betty Williams and husband, Dave; brother, Frank King and wife, Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Anna Margaret King; his son, Walter B. Dub King, III, and wife, Pam of Pueblo, Colorado and daughter, Margaret Hendrix and husband, David of Dallas; grandsons, Travis Wood and wife, Debby and Mark Wood, all of California; granddaughter, Ashley King Cano and husband, Cody of Denver; great-grandsons, Zachary and Ethan Wood; sister, Martha McNabb and husband, Harold McNabb and nieces, nephews and cousins.
