November 8, 1934 — February 14, 2023

Dwain Barber, 88, formerly of Waco, passed away February 14, 2023, in Round Rock, Texas.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, February 25 at 11:00 a.m. at Stanford Chapel Cemetery.

Dwain Wesley Barber was born on November 8, 1934, in Waco, to Oliver Lee and Mary Olive Dorris Barber. He grew up in Bellmead where he attended La Vega High School. At La Vega he was a member of the football and track teams. After graduating from La Vega High School, he worked at Hubby-Reese Wholesale Grocers and attended Baylor University. He married the love of his life, Sandra Hyman, on February 11, 1956. They were married 65 years and had three children and two grandchildren together.

Dwain served two years in the United States Army, during which he and Sandra lived in several places, their favorite being Monterey, California. After his honorary discharge, they moved back to Waco where he held jobs at International Paper Company, 3M Advertising, and Rainbo Baking Company. The couple also lived with their family in College Station, Texas for several years before returning to Waco, where they would live until Sandra’s death in 2021.

Dwain was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandra; his parents; his daughter, Susan Barber; brother-in law, Clayton Hueske; nephew, Billy Hueske; and niece, Darla Ayers.

He is survived by his daughter, Terri Kurz and husband, Mike; son, Stephen Barber; grandchildren, Andrew Kurz and Cassandra Kurz; sister, Jeanette Hueske; niece, Lesa Gage and husband, Bob; sister-in-law, Diane Watrous; and several nieces and nephews.

All who knew Dwain will remember his warmth, his kindness, his smile and, most especially, his sense of humor. We are left with the memory of many funny stories and the tears of laughter that would accompany them. He was an avid fan of Baylor University sports, especially football and women’s basketball. He was a long-time member of Western Heights Baptist Church. He was a beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend and he will be greatly missed.

The family would like to thank the residents and staff of Parkwood Meadows for making the last year one of care and friendship for Dwain.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or the charity of your choice.
