Edward Lotan Smith passed away Saturday, December 30, 2017. Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 8, 2018, at Crawford Cemetery. Visitation will be 2:00-4:00 p.m., Sunday, January 7, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home. Ed was born September 21, 1920, in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, to Hiram and Margaret Smith. As an officer, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe and in the Philippines. Ed worked as a traffic engineer with the Texas Highway Department for 30 years, proudly. He was a registered Texas Professional Engineer for over 50 years. In 1964, he was selected as the Engineer of the Year for the Central Texas Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE). Ed was married to his wife, Peggy Garrett Smith, for 62 wonderful years. He was a loving father, who led by example. His interests and talents were music, photography, flying, boating and his family. He was a beekeeper and cabinetmaker. Ed was a member of Lakewood Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Peggy; and his son, Brett Walter Smith. He is survived by his sister, Margaret Williams of Wisconsin; and his son, Glenn Edward Smith of Houston; and his beloved nieces and nephews.
