An evening visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 28, in the Garden Room at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home, 6101 Bosque Blvd, Waco. Bryan was born on August 22, 1922 to Dr. Edwin Kidd Harris and Esther Litton Harris, in Homer, LA, and grew up in Shreveport. His father instilled a strong work ethic in him as a child. He began his working life at age eight as a milk delivery boy, and worked as a newspaper carrier through his teen years. He graduated from Byrd High School in 1938, and attended Southwestern Louisiana Institute in Lafayette, graduating in 1941. During World War II, he attended Louisiana State University Medical School in New Orleans, and was in the US Navy Reserve as a medical student. After graduating in 1945, he served as a naval doctor in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Jackson, MS, and was honorably discharged as a lieutenant. He returned to Shreveport in 1947 to complete his medical residency at Highland Sanitarium. He married Vera Munn, a registered nurse, in 1947, and practiced internal medicine in Shreveport before moving to Dallas in 1955 to take a second residency in radiology at Baylor Hospital. He and his family lived in McKinney during his residency and he served as the physician for the McKinney High School football team. In 1960, he moved to Waco with Vera and their five children, where he became a partner in Waco Radiology. He practiced medicine in Waco for thirty-five years, faithfully serving Waco Radiology, Providence Hospital, and several clinics in surrounding communities, including Goodall-Witcher Hospital in Clifton. Bryan frequently served as traveling physician for the Baylor football team during the 1960s. He was board certified in both internal medicine and radiology, and was a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Radiology, Texas Medical Association, McLennan County Medical Society, and other professional organizations. He was a member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church for many years. Bryan's first love was football at all levels, from high school to the NFL. He was a devoted follower of his beloved LSU Tigers, Baylor Bears, and Dallas Cowboys. In the off season he enjoyed talking about football, as well as travel, photography, reading, World War II history, and visiting grandkids. Bryan is preceded in death by his wife, Vera. He is survived by five children: daughter, Diane Hatfield and her husband, Larry, of Comfort, TX; daughter, Linda MacDougall and husband, Alex, of Waco; daughter, Nancy McClymond of Taos, NM; daughter, Susan Weathersby and husband, Paul, of Tomball, TX; and son, Bryan Harris Jr. and his wife, Kelly, of Austin. Other survivors include 18 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and his sister, Milner Ann Qualls, of Tyler, TX. Pallbearers are Tyler McClymond, Clay Renfro, Kevin Weathersby, Austin Harris, Trevor Harris, Kevin MacDougall and David Maness. While floral arrangements would be greatly appreciated, the family suggests the Baylor Bear Foundation Athletic Scholarship Fun for memorial contributions.
