Elizabeth McGlasson April 1, 1927 – January 28, 2006 Funeral services for Elizabeth McGlasson will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, February 1, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Chuck Treadwell officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Mrs. McGlasson died early on the morning of January 28, 2006 at a local hospital. Mrs. McGlasson Liz to friends, was born in Tyler on April 1, 1927 to the late William Clark Sparks, Sr. and Evelyn Odom Sparks. After attending Texas State College for Women now TWU, she transferred to the University of Texas at Austin where she received a bachelor’s degree. In 1950 she married the late Sam Jack McGlasson and subsequently moved with him to Waco where both were active in Waco affairs. Memorials to her husband were instrumental in the construction of the lion exhibit at Waco’s Cameron Park Zoo and the purchase of the lion, quickly named “Sam Jack”. Mrs. McGlasson remained an ardent supporter of the zoo and took great delight in the birth of the baby lion sired by Sam Jack. Mr. and Mrs. McGlasson also funded the oncology floor at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center. Active in church affairs at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Mrs. McGlasson was a member of the Altar Guild and St. Paul’s Guild. Her civic activities included general chairman of the Cotton Palace. She also currently served as corresponding secretary of Oakwood Cemetery board of directors. After a huge trove of mammoth bones was found on McGlasson land, Mrs. McGlasson became a zealous supporter of the proposed Mammoth Site Park. Mrs. McGlasson was preceded in death by her husband and two children, both of whom died soon after birth. She is survived by three children, Sam Jack McGlasson, Jr. and his wife, Tina of Hilo, Hawaii; Lizanne Hendrickson and husband, Jim of Norton, Massachusetts; and Richard McGlasson of Longview. She is also survived by one brother, W.C. Bud Sparks, Jr. and his wife, Nancy of Clifton. Pallbearers are David Kultgen, Pat Beard, Dave Campbell, Fred Bostwick, Bill Story, Harold Mathias, Reese Killion and Blake Browder. Honorary pallbearers are John Mayfield, George R. Rook Edwards, Tom Collins, Malcolm Duncan, Bill Taylor, Dr. Jim Copeland, Sam Allison, Barker Chapman, Melbourne Appell, James McCain and Jon Spelman. The family will be at home after services. Memorial donations may be made to Cameron Park Zoo, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Community Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
