Elizabeth Monroe Witt Pickens July 4, 1909-January 29, 2008 Elizabeth Monroe Witt Pickens passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on January 29, 2008, surrounded by her three loving daughters. The funeral service will be at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel on Saturday, February 2, 1:30 p.m., with Rev. David Story officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, February 1. Elizabeth was born on July 4, 1909, in Waco to Charles Eugene Witt, a prominent Waco attorney, and Martha Elizabeth Mattie Hollis. She was a graduate of Waco High School and Baylor University. She was a teacher in the Waco Independent School District and later retired from the Texas Workforce Commission. After that, she worked with her husband for many years in their rental property management business. She married Charles Israel Pickens on June 6, 1934. They were members of Columbus Ave. Baptist Church for 70 plus years. Elizabeth held offices in her Sunday school class and was a member of the BALL Club, the Forty-Two Club, and Training Union. Over the years she was also a member of the Beaux Arts Club, Ploma Collins Club, and the Garden Club. She and her husband were members of the Sears Retirees Association. She was very proud of her grandfather, J.M. Witt, M.D., who was a long-time prominent Waco physician, and her uncle, Edgar Witt, who was Lieutenant Governor of Texas, and later was appointed by President Roosevelt as Chairman of the Mexican Claims Commission; and after that, appointed by President Truman as Chairman of the Indian Claims Commission. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Martha Witt Seley, and brother, Charles Edgar Witt. She is survived by her children, Marie Tipton and husband, Frank; Martha Louise Corley; and Charleen Isbell. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Kathe Tipton, David Tipton, Terrie Carlson and husband, Randy; Charles Tipton and wife, Robin; Kimberly Denton, Ronnie Denton, Barry Denton, Sherri Lawson, and Charles Isbell; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great, great-grandchild. She also leaves behind nieces, nephews and many friends. She was a Christian lady of great faith and was kind to everyone. All who knew her loved her. She loved all her family and friends. She especially loved her three daughters with all her heart and their welfare was always on her mind.
