Elizabeth Sue Cox lost her six-year battle with Alzheimer's disease on July 20, 2017. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 24, at First Baptist Church in Waco with a graveside service and interment in the Dawson County Cemetery in Lamesa 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 25. Sue was born August 8, 1940, to Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Green in Sherman, Texas; and reared in Lamesa, where she attended elementary and high school. Upon receiving her bachelor’s degree from Baylor University and her master's degree from Texas Tech University, she taught government and business in Lamesa, Shreveport, and Dallas. In 1980, she left the classroom to become a political consultant and lobbyist, representing many causes and candidates over a twenty­year career. Mrs. Cox was the founder and first Executive Director of the Texas Council for Problem Gambling. Sue served on numerous boards and committees during her lifetime, including National Council on Responsible Gaming, the Texas Racetracks Chaplains Board, National Council on Problem Gambling, Texas Close­ up Commission, the Baylor Bear Foundation, The First Baptist Church Foundation, and many others. Sue also served three terms on the Democratic State Executive Committee. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority and named Baylor Football Fan of the Year in 2009. Mrs. Cox is survived by her husband, Carl Cox of Waco; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Jeff Newton; granddaughters, Natalie Jane and Emily Sue Newton, all of Lone Tree Colorado; niece, Teri Cox Stollmeyer and husband, Ron, of Walnut, California; and nephew, Kip Cox of Costa Rico.
