Ella Janes Mckinney

MCKINNEY, ELLA JANES Ella Janes McKinney, 92, of Waco died Wednesday, August 28, 2002 at a local hospital. Services will be held at 11:30am Tuesday, September 3 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel, 1124 Washington Ave. with Rev. Art Tarpy officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 6-7:30pm Monday, September 2 at the funeral home. Mrs. McKinney was born December 31, 1909 in the Leroy community to D. T. and Ella Morgan Janes. She was reared and educated in Waco and graduated from Baylor University where she received her bachelors degree in 1931 and later went on to get her masters degree in 1960. She taught school in the Waco area for 20 years. She was active in PTA, Blue Birds, Cub Scouts and Camp Fire Girls. She married Benjamin Franklin McKinney July 5, 1937. He preceded her in death December 24, 1962. Mrs. McKinney was a member of Austin Ave. United Methodist Church where she was active in the Hartsfield Sunday School class serving as president for two years. She was chairman of the History Committee and active in Meals on Wheels. She was a kitchen worker at the church following the Waco tornado. She established a permanent student scholarship at Baylor University and was a volunteer at the Strecker Museum and Village for 15 years. She was active in the Daughters of the Republic of Texas serving as President-General of the State Chapter from 1981 - 1983. She also served as president of Book Trailers Club, Beaux Artes Club and Pierian Club as well as being a supporter of the Waco Symphony, the Waco Civic Theater and the Leroy Volunteer Fire Dept. She was a volunteer and board member of the American Cancer Society for 10 years and received the YMCA Pathfinder Award for Volunteerism in 1997. Survivors include her daughter, Mary Jo Jameson and husband Doug of Arlington; son, William F. McKinney and wife Kathleen of Fort Worth; grandchildren, David Grubbs and wife Irene, Katherine Mabray and husband Chris, William F. McKinney, Jr. and Jennifer McKinney; and great grandson, Justin Mabray. Pallbearers will be John McNamara, Jr., John McNamara, III, Clifton Robinson, Mike Gulig, Chris Mabray, Don Janes, and James Goodman. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.
