Ellen J. Thompson

July 15, 1940 — May 27, 2024

Ellen Leeds Jones Thompson, 83 years old, peacefully passed away May 27, 2024, at The Delaney at Lake Waco with family members at her side.

Her Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. June 6, 2024, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 515 Columbus Avenue, Waco, Texas 76701 with The Reverend Patrick J. Miller, and The Reverend Samantha R.E. Smith officiating. Interment will follow at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church columbarium.

Born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, Ellen grew up in Akron, Ohio, and Texarkana, Texas. Her family then relocated to Waco, Texas, where she attended Dean Highland Elementary School, North Junior High School, and Waco High School before finishing her final two years of high school at Westtown School in West Chester, Pennsylvania. She initially attended the University of Texas and later transferred to Baylor University where she graduated in 1962. She worked for the Texas Department of Transportation for over twenty years before retiring in 1999. Ellen had a wide variety of interests, a determined and unflappable spirit, and a zest for life. She loved attending Baylor University football games, even in the seasons when a victory was as likely as snow in Texas in August. She was passionate about family gatherings, Baylor University women’s basketball, Broadway musicals, traveling, history and historical homes, any beach anywhere, dogs, Baskin-Robbins, Baylor Lifetime Learning, the Waco Symphony, hummingbirds, bald eagles, wildflowers, and growing Texas native plants. Ellen was also a longtime member of the Junior League of Waco, Historic Waco Foundation, and The Brazos Forum, where she served for many years as the membership chair. Dedicated to her faith, Ellen was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for close to sixty years.

Ellen was preceded in death by her father, Charles Ezra Jones; mother, Martha Leeds Bartlett Jones; and brothers, Bartlett Campbell Jones, and Charles Kirkendall Jones.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna Thompson Meers, and husband Stanley Meers III; her son, Ted Bartlett Thompson, and husband, Garland Hamic, III; daughter, Jennifer Thompson Dutschmann, and husband Gary Dutschmann; and her granddaughters, Allyson Meers, and Abigail Meers.
